words by Melonie
with contributions by Rachel
When Dorian Mirth first heard Andy Serkis was coming to Salt Lake City, we instantly tried to come up with ideas for some clever gift or other that we could give him as a small token of our thanks. It was some weeks before Rachel came up with the perfect idea: a Road Cone. (If this doesn’t make sense to you, please refer to “The Making of ‘The Long and the Short of It’” on the theatrical edition of The Two Towers DVD. Thank you.) The task fell to my shoulders, the only unemployed and graduated member, to go on a cone quest. After checking MANY stores, I finally found the perfect thing: a 2″ toy road cone. I took it out of the toy set it came with and put it on a key chain. I made a tag, which read: “To Andy Serkis. With deepest appreciation from Dorian Mirth.”

The lovely and gracious Andy Serkis visited last night as part of his promotion for his new book Gollum: How We Made Movie Magic. The crowd of fans that showed up was, to quote Andy himself, “Overwhelming!” So much in fact that after the very enjoyable Q&A I never got a good place in line so went unsigned . But really the Q&A was the best part anyway for which I was almost front and center (having staked out a seat 2 hours before he arrived). Plus I was co-conspirator on a gift for Mr. Serkis that turned out very well:
A road cone.

Dorian Mirth had a WONDERFUL time playing for the Salt Lake City Line Party! It was very exciting to play for over 1,000 LOTR fans! A more detailed report will come later, but for now, enjoy this picture our makeup artist, Shawn, took. Shawn created Dorian Mirth’s prosthetics, as well as Gollum’s.

Dorian Mirth will be having a raffle for three items at the Salt Lake City Line Party! Party goers will have the opportunity to win one (or more) of three items available. There will be two hobbit cloaks made by Melonie and Rachel (costumers for Dorian Mirth) and a pair of prosthetic hobbit feet made and donated by Dorian Mirth’s makeup artist, Shawn. Tickets will be $1 each. Your support is very appreciated and proceeds will help make it possible for Dorian Mirth to appear at TORN’s Oscar Party in February.

As posted on TheOneRing.net:
Lady Luke Skywalker from Dorian Mirth (formerly known as Vis Sit Tecum) writes: Yesterday was one of our group members birthday so to celebrate, I made her a special cake — The One Ring! I’ve included pictures because it was rather amusing. I did the lettering free-hand and having no prior experience with One Ring writing, I think it turned out pretty well.
