Last week, on March 26, we had our first “School Gig”. This is something we’ve wanted to do for a while — to teach kids about the historical music we play. We went to Jenny P. Stewart Elementary School and held a small assembly with all the 6th Graders there. I have to say, it was one of the most fun gigs we’ve ever played! We all dressed up in different period costumes, and talked a little about history, so they could get an idea of context for the music. We were expecting to have to deal with restless or inattentive children, but they were so well-behaved, and genuinely interested! Much of it might have been that they’ve been learning the recorder in class, and had probably never seen or heard the different sizes. They were also thrilled to hear about our LOTR gigs, and wanted to know who we met from the movies. It was exciting, and very fulfilling, to see them discover this music for the first time!
We hope to be able to go out to the schools more in the future. Thanks to all the teachers and students; We had a GREAT time!
